On Wednesday, May 5th, 2021 the fifth World Maternal Mental Health Day will be observed. This day is meant to raise awareness that any mother or mother-to-be can suffer from perinatal anxiety and mood disorders that can happen at any time during pregnancy, and up through the first 12 months after giving childbirth, and that there are effective treatment options available.

In some nations, up to 1 in 5 new mothers suffers through some degree of perinatal mood and anxiety disorder, also known as (PMADs). If gone unnoticed or untreated, there can be tragic, dire, and lasting consequences that affect the mother, child, or both.

The intent of the day is to increase awareness of PMADS to help improve the quality of care for women suffering from PMADs, and to encourage women who may be suffering to reach out and seek help.
