Adult Therapy – What Do Therapists Do?

Suffering from a mental illness at any age can be extremely difficult. All facets of your life can be affected by mental illness and getting out from under the crushing pressure of mental illness can feel impossible. Depression, anxiety, stress, insomnia, OCD, ADHD, eating disorders, and relationship issues can feel like a weight that you just cannot lift off your shoulders.

That’s where our therapists come in. Our licensed therapists help you identify, and work through issues causing or contributing to your mental illness.  Based on your individual situation, our therapists will help reshape your thought process and arm you with the tools to approach situations differently, and help lift that weight off your shoulders.

Our Therapists do not prescribe medications, (but can work with our psychiatrists if they think medications can help your situation) rather, they work with you using a variety of methods such as behavioral therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, humanistic therapy, breathing techniques, and more.

What Conditions can An Adult Therapist Treat?

What Kinds Of Therapies Do We Use?

Based on your unique situation, our therapists will administer specific therapies that they think will help you recover quickly and effectively. Our therapies range from cognitive behavioral therapy, interpersonal therapy and dialectical behavioral therapy to systems therapy, mindfulness and relaxation, and behavioral therapy.

Do I need a Therapist or a Psychiatrist?

That is a great question! Both therapists and psychiatrists can treat similar conditions. The difference between a Psychiatrist and a Therapist have to do with training and the approach to treating mental illness.

Therapists licensed in their modality with a degree in psychology and focus on treating the emotional/mental state of the patient and use more behavioral intervention to help treat mental conditions. Therapists typically treat mental health using one-on-one therapy, group therapy, couples therapy and support groups.

Psychiatrists are licensed medical doctors who can prescribe medications and take a more medical approach to treating mental illness. Psychiatrists can also prescribe treatments such as Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), electroconvolsive therapy and other more specialized medical treatments.

Both psychiatry and therapy can be prescribed together to create a more holistic approach to mental health treatment. A big part of the decision to use one or the other comes down to your personal preference, but our team can help you decide as well based on your condition.
