What is Spravato® (Esketamine)?

Spravato®, a nasal spray containing esketamine, is utilized in tandem with oral antidepressants to address specific cases of major depressive disorder (MDD). FDA-approved for adults with depression who have not responded to conventional treatments, or those struggling with depression accompanied by thoughts of self-harm or suicide, Spravato® represents a cutting-edge solution.

Ensuring patient safety remains our paramount concern. While Spravato® stands as a viable treatment for severe depression, individuals treated at ABC must maintain community safety. Those experiencing active suicidal thoughts or feeling unsafe should seek immediate assistance at a crisis center or hospital.

Do You Qualify for Spravato® Treatment?

You may be an eligible candidate for Spravato® treatment if you meet the following criteria:

  • Diagnosed with major depressive disorder or treatment-resistant depression.
  • Unresponsive to other forms of treatment like psychotherapy, antidepressant medications, or lifestyle changes.
  • Experiencing major depressive disorder with thoughts of self-harm or suicide while maintaining personal safety in the community (hospitalization may be required depending on the severity).
  • Aged 18 years or older.
  • Willing to adhere to safety measures recommended by your provider.

If you meet these criteria and believe Spravato® could be a suitable option, consult your provider for a comprehensive evaluation of your symptoms and information on how Spravato® or alternative treatments can effectively manage your depression.

Your Spravato® Treatment Process

A Spravato® treatment regimen comprises a series of sessions administered in your provider’s office. After intranasal administration, trained staff monitor patients for a minimum of two hours to ensure there are no serious side effects.
Expect rapid relief with Spravato® treatment, with some patients experiencing symptom alleviation within hours of their initial session. Typically administered twice a week for four weeks, treatment frequency may decrease or conclude based on individual response and symptoms.

Each convenient SPRAVATO® therapy session occurs at one of our relaxing clinics. You will arrive as an outpatient and:

Esketamine vs. Ketamine

Esketamine is a form of the combination medicine ketamine, widely used in medicine for anesthesia and occasionally as a recreational drug. Notably, the doses of esketamine employed in depression treatment are substantially lower, and Spravato® administration occurs in a controlled environment. Esketamine’s increased potency allows for lower doses, minimizing side effects. Although Spravato® may induce dissociation, the dosage is insufficient to produce intoxication or anesthesia.

Conditions Treated

Spravato® is FDA-approved for adults with treatment-resistant depression or major depressive disorder accompanied by thoughts of self-harm or suicide. However, it’s crucial to consult your healthcare provider to determine if Spravato® is the right option for you.

Mechanism of Action

Functioning as an NMDA receptor antagonist, Spravato® attaches to and inhibits NMDA receptors in the brain. This action elevates glutamate levels, initiating downstream processes that enhance the growth and connectivity of neurons.

In contrast to many traditional antidepressants, Spravato® does not operate by inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin, norepinephrine, or dopamine. The exact mechanism behind Spravato®’s antidepressant effects remains under investigation.
