What do Adult Psychiatrists Do?

Adult psychiatrists are licensed medical professionals who use medication to treat behavioral and mental health disorders, and adult psychiatry focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental illnesses in adults 18 yrs. old and older. Unlike child psychiatry, where parents and educators take an active role in aiding the child, seeking out a diagnosis from a psychiatrist and exploring treatment options if needed is often initially sought directly by the adult themselves. In many cases, adults are more likely to be suffering from a mood or anxiety disorder, whereas children or more likely to be suffering from a behavioral disorder or ADHD.

After evaluating and prescribing the medication to the patient, adult psychiatrists spend their time adjusting the dosage or changing medication based on feedback from the patient. Every individual responds differently to medication, so it is the psychiatrist’s job to make sure the treatment is working as expected, and if not, adjust for this. Treatment paths from adult psychiatrists may include medication and may be paired with cognitive behavioral therapy to aid in a more holistic approach toward wellness.

With proper diagnosis and treatment, many mental health conditions can be brought under control, allowing a person to lead a successful and happy personal, social, and professional life.

What Conditions Do Adult Psychiatrists Treat?

What Kinds Of Medications Do Psychiatrists Prescribe?

Before psychiatrists prescribe any medication, they evaluate you to determine what condition you may have, and what medication will be most likely to help. Depending on your condition, your psychiatrist may prescribe anti-depressants, anti-anxiety medications, mood stabilizers, stimulants or another drug shown to help your specific condition.

What is the Difference Between A Psychiatrist and a Therapist?

The difference between a Psychiatrist and a Therapist have to do with training and the approach to treating mental illness.

Psychiatrists are licensed medical doctors who can prescribe medications and take a more medical approach to treating mental illness. Psychiatrists can also prescribe treatments such as Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), electroconvolsive therapy and other more specialized medical treatments.

Therapists licensed in their modality with a degree in psychology and focus on treating the emotional/mental state of the patient and use more behavioral intervention to help treat mental conditions. Therapists typically treat mental health using one-on-one therapy, group therapy, couples therapy and support groups.

Both psychiatry and therapy can be prescribed together to create a more holistic approach to mental health treatment.
